Day 24 of Advent
The Gospel of Luke
Our family memorized the first 20 verses of Luke 2 several years ago using one of the scripture songs by Kings Things on YouTube Music. We didn’t realize what wonderful memories it would build, memorizing together as we drove south the week of Christmas to spend the days leading up to the 25th on one of Alabama’s beaches. We had such a great Christmas beach trip that we repeat it when we can, and we will always remember singing Luke 2 as a family while in God’s beautiful creation.

11 “ For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.
12 And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.”

Scripture Reading for the Day
Isaiah 9:2-6
2 The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; a light has dawned on those living in the land of darkness. 3 You have enlarged the nation and increased its joy. The people have rejoiced before you as they rejoice at harvest time and as they rejoice when dividing spoils. 4 For you have shattered their oppressive yoke and the rod on their shoulders, the staff of their oppressor, just as you did on the day of Midian. 5 For every trampling boot of battle and the bloodied garments of war will be burned as fuel for the fire. 6 For a child will be born for us, a son will be given to us, and the government will be on his shoulders. He will be named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.

The Gospel of Luke
8 And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9 And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear. 10 And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. 11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. 12 And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.” 13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying,
14 “Glory to God in the highest,
and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!” -
About the Author
The Gospel of Luke, penned by the physician Luke, offers a meticulously researched account of Jesus’ life and ministry. Unlike the more narrative-driven Gospels of Matthew and Mark, Luke’s work is a detailed historical document, reflecting his dedication to uncovering the truth. His education as a doctor shaped his inquisitive nature, prompting him to ask questions like “Why?” and “How?” This attention to detail sets his writings apart, as he often includes information overlooked by other Gospel authors.
Luke’s association with the Apostle Paul further highlights his commitment to spreading the gospel. As Paul’s traveling companion, Luke undertook the substantial task of documenting Jesus’ ministry, showing his dedication to God’s Kingdom and his desire to benefit others, particularly Theophilus, the recipient of his writings.
As a Gentile, Luke wrote about the Messiah from an outsider’s perspective, which influenced his understanding of God’s mercy and the inclusion of Gentiles in salvation. His gratitude for this inclusion shines through in his work, underscoring his unique role in the New Testament.
