Westward Ho! Day 14: Pure Magic at Capitol Reef!

Westward Ho! Day 14: Pure Magic at Capitol Reef!

Woke up to breathtaking panoramic views at Cook's Mesa, our free boondocking spot by Capitol Reef. Unbelievable that places this gorgeous are free (you don't find that in the Southeast!). Kids spent hours playing in red sand, climbing rocks, & exploring scrubby trees, declaring it "best campsite & best day EVER!" And it just got better!

First stop in the park: the legendary Gifford Homestead pie shop! This historic house serves fresh pies, cinnamon rolls & ice cream. Mark was thrilled with dairy-free pie options! We indulged in all three – pure, sugary bliss. Next, a hike! The trail (Hickman Bridge, perhaps?) started steep but opened to stunning canyon views & countless rocks for kid-scrambling in cool, shaded spots. We only managed a mile in the heat, but it was incredible.

On the trail, we met kind hikers, and later found them waiting for a ride at the trailhead. So, we piled them into our very messy, very full van! What a fun ride sharing stories & even some Piper & Leaf tea. Their daughter has a jerky company out West! Love making new friends.

Then, as the kids got their Junior Ranger badges at the visitor center, we met ANOTHER family… from MADISON, AL, who are regulars at our P&L Strong Station store! Small world, big joy!

Could've stayed days, but decided to push north towards Salt Lake City, hearts full from a truly spectacular day. So much beauty, kindness, and connection.
