Root Brew: Old-Fashioned Roots in a Brand-New Blend

Root Brew: Old-Fashioned Roots in a Brand-New Blend

Have you ever found a flavor that is so nostalgic, it takes you straight back to your childhood? A flavor so familiar and classic, it feels just a little bit magical? For our family, root beer is one of those flavors. It shows up at summer cookouts, in glass bottles clinking in ice chests, or poured into frosty mugs with a thick, creamy foam on top.

But what many people don’t realize is that root beer didn’t start as soda at all! It started with roots.

A Little History Beneath the Foam

Long before it became a classic American soft drink, root beer was something much closer to (wait for it) tea!

Early versions were brewed from a mixture of roots, herbs, and spices. Sarsaparilla, burdock, dandelion, and licorice were slowly steeped to draw out their rich, earthy flavors. These blends were often home-brewed, passed down, and tweaked from family to family.

It was not about carbonation or sweetness at first. It was about the craft of brewing something deep, complex, and rooted (quite literally) in nature.

Over time, sugar, bubbles, and bottling transformed it into the soda we know today. But underneath all that fizz, the original idea remained: a blend of roots and spices, carefully brewed. And that is exactly what drew us back to it.

A Root Brew tea bag from Piper and Leaf Tea Co. is beside a glass mug with creamy tea and a metal straw; loose Root Brew leaves and warm spices are scattered in front.

Why Root Beer as a Tea?

As a teenager, Connor was completely obsessed with root beer. He spent years experimenting with his own recipes and brewing attempts, chasing the perfect balance of spice, sweetness, and depth.

Even through high school, he and his friends made a hobby of tracking down every root beer they could find, rating them, comparing them, debating which ones got it right.

Then, years later, the idea found new life. While visiting family in Ohio, MaryClaire heard the request more than once: “You need to make a root beer tea.”

With the suggestion came the onslaught of sweet nostalgia. We simply had to try it!

Enter: Root Brew

Root Brew is our way of honoring both the history and our fond memories of root beer. Not as a soda, but as it once was: a true brewed blend of roots, herbs, and spices that captures that familiar flavor in a completely new (and yet very old) way.

It is smooth and layered, a nostalgic blend of roots and warm spices, crafted for a smooth, creamy brew.

Root Brew is:

  • Earthy and warm when served hot

  • Bright, nostalgic, and surprisingly classic when iced

  • And for those who like to experiment, it transforms beautifully into a sparkling treat

What’s Inside the Brew

Every ingredient was chosen to echo the traditional roots of root beer while creating a balanced, drinkable cup:

A bag of Piper and Leaf Tea Co. Root Brew stands between two glasses of creamy tea, with three tea bags displayed in front of the nostalgic blend.

  • Sarsaparilla
  • Burdock
  • Licorice
  • Star anise
  • Allspice
  • Coriander
  • Dandelion root
  • Orange rind
  • Cinnamon
  • Ginger
  • Cloves
  • Peppermint

Caffeine-free and deeply comforting, it is a blend you can enjoy any time of day.

The Soda Jerk Spirit

We could not create a root beer-inspired blend without tipping our hat (quite literally) to the soda jerks who made root beer floats an icon.

There is something timeless about that image: The paper hat. The counter. The clink of glass. So, for this release, we leaned into that nostalgia in a big way, including a few playful nods you will see woven throughout our photos (yes, including the hat).

We even created a printable template inspired by those classic hats for this launch! Some traditions are too fun to be left in the past. Use this template to make your own Piper & Leaf soda jerk hat at home!

A Limited Release Worth Savoring

Root Brew is a brand-new blend for us, but it feels like something that has been waiting in the wings for a long time. And because of the specialty ingredients and small-batch nature of this blend, it is a limited release. Small batches mean we won’t be restocking this one anytime soon. Once it is gone, it is gone!

If you've ever been curious to try something a little different or taste something familiar, but in a new way. It's an invitation to return to your roots!

How to Brew

  • Water Temperature: 212°F

  • Steep Time: 10 minutes

  • Caffeine: None

Brew it hot for a rich, grounding cup, or chill it and add a little sparkle for a bright, nostalgic twist!

Turn It Into a Treat

If you really want to lean into the nostalgia, Root Brew was made for this:

Root Brew Float

  • 16 oz pint jar

  • 1.5 oz concentrated Root Brew tea

  • 1.5 oz simple syrup

  • 8 oz cold sparkling water

  • 1 scoop vanilla ice cream

Instructions:
Swirl tea, simple syrup, and sparkling water together. Top with a scoop of ice cream and enjoy immediately.

Root Brew Cream Soda

  • 16 oz pint jar (filled with ice)

  • 1.5 oz concentrated Root Brew tea

  • 1.5 oz simple syrup

  • 8 oz sparkling water

  • Splash of sweet cream or half-and-half

Instructions:
Add tea concentrate, simple syrup, and sparkling water over ice. Swirl gently, then finish with a splash of cream.

A glass mug of Piper and Leaf Tea Co.'s Root Brew sits on a round tray in a retro diner with red and white booths and a checkered floor.

If all flavors tell a story, then
Root Brew tells one that has been brewing for generations.

From teenage experiments and taste tests to family requests across state lines, this blend has been a long time coming. We think you’ll love it as much as we do.

I just received your root brew yesterday and wanted to tell you that it is exceptionally well done! I love root beer but rarely drink soda because it’s too sweet for me. This is truly perfect. Thank you so much for a new favorite! I wish I would’ve ordered a second bag for tea concentrate, but I’m keeping this one so I can savor it for longer. Thanks again, you guys are the best!

So excited to try this blend!! Ordered two bags because I already know I’m going to love it. I’ve never had a bad brew from P&L 💕
